Ayurvedic Perspective on Vitiligo (Shwitra/Switra)
Vitiligo, known as Shwitra or Kilasa in Ayurveda, is a skin disorder characterized by depigmentation patches due to the destruction or malfunction of melanocytes. Ayurveda attributes vitiligo to an imbalance of the tridoshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) and improper functioning of Agni (digestive fire), leading to the accumulation of Ama (toxins).
Causes (Nidana) in Ayurveda
1. Viruddhahara (Incompatible diet): Eating foods with conflicting qualities (e.g., milk with fish).
2. Excessive Pitta-aggravating foods: Spicy, sour, and acidic foods.
3. Poor digestion (Mandagni): Weak digestive fire leading to toxin accumulation.
4. Stress and emotional disturbances: Aggravates Vata and Pitta.
5. Autoimmune response: Seen as imbalance in the body’s defense mechanisms.
Pathogenesis (Samprapti)
An imbalance in Pitta (especially Bhrajak Pitta) leads to vitiation of Rakta (blood), Mamsa (muscle), and Meda (fat tissues).
This manifests as depigmentation due to impaired melanin synthesis.
